The Epitome of Luxury at St. Lucias Sugar Beach, A Viceroy Resort

Welcome to Sugar Beach in sunny Saint Lucia – a stunning and luxurious little paradise that’s renowned for its beauty, perfect weather conditions, and unrivaled romantic retreat atmosphere. Lying within the grounds of the UNESCO world heritage site, The Pitons, this beachfront resort glimmers like a getaway haven encircled by lush mountains, and picturesque ocean waves. Offering countless activities from spa days to taking part in locally guided excursions, visiting Sugar Beach is sure to provide couples or singles on vacation with a broad range of unforgettable experiences during your Caribbean getaway.

Getting there

You will fly into Hewanorra International Airport (UVF) located in the south of the island. Sugar Beach offers transportation to and from the airport, you must tell them your flight time before hand and they will have everything coordinated and ready to fetch you at the airport. Try to get transportation through them as we heard the drivers for other companies are a little wild on the roads. The drive from the airport is about an hour or so and winds through the colorful towns on the west coast of the island. Once you get close to Sugar Beach you will drive along the side of the Petit Piton on a beautiful road through the jungle.

You will head straight to your villa when you enter the property and your butler will be there waiting to greet you and start your check in process. Everything was incredibly seamless and they were so helpful and thorough. Once again, she was talking about the room and the property and I was just awestruck by the views and not listening, I’m sure she explained everything very well. She then gathered our passports and credit card, headed to reception to check us in and left us to enjoy our first moments in St. Lucia.

The room

We got so lucky with our room, the above was not ours but they all have a similar layout and are actually all privately owned (fomo). We had 701F/702, I don’t know how we ended up with a double room but we did and it was fantastic. We had fully unobstructed ocean views, most rooms have that but some have other villas in their sight, we were in total privacy in our little oasis. The bathrooms were immaculate, the tubs were beautiful, they had lovely robes and slippers (my favorite) and huge closets for you to unpack into. The inside looks very similar to the outside, it is very clean, very white, and very minimal but it works well as you are surrounded by green and blue everywhere you look. There were minibars in both of the rooms and the tastiest little snack jars.

The patios were where we spent most of our time, understandably, look at that patio! Both of our patios had pools, one was this same layout and one was an infinity pool. Despite it being quite warm (we went in January) the pools were actually freezing so we spent more time on the loungers. One of our patios had two lounge chairs and a breakfast table and the other had two lounge chairs and a more formal looking table. The room also had a stunning outdoor shower that was entirely hidden and secluded from any of the other villas including our own. Showering outside with butterflies flying around you and just the sound and sight of nature is an experience like no other.

The property

The resort sits on the side of a mountain on more than 100 acres so getting around definitely requires one of the hotel shuttles. If you choose to stay closer to the beach you are walking distance to the restaurants, the spa, the fitness center, and the water sports. The only thing you would need to shuttle to is the tennis courts if you wanted to get a game in. The shuttles are quick, convenient and super accessible, we never had to wait long to get one.

The property is built within a jungle and you truly feel like you are immersed within it. It is one of the most stunning properties I have been on, the greenery is breathtaking and the mountains towering over the resort is an incredible sight to wake up to every morning. Sugar Beach offers multiple different room options from guest rooms, luxury villas and cottages, beachfront bungalows, and  residences to the beachfront collection. Depending on where you want to be and how much you want to spend, you can choose your option here.

The food

There are five restaurants on the property all offering different cuisines. Our favorite was The Cane Bar, their Asian tapas style plates were absolutely delicious. The Cane Bar is the only one that is fully indoors, all of the others have beautiful outdoor seating overlooking the ocean. We weren’t incredibly impressed with the food at many of the other places, it felt like a big missed opportunity. There was some really excellent fresh ceviche at Jalousie Grill one night and live music. Other than that and The Cane Bar nothing was really outstanding.

Things to do

There are plenty of things to do on the property and off the property. On the property there is a lovely spa, an immaculate fitness center, lounge chairs to relax on the beach or at your villa all day, beach volleyball, and tennis courts. They offer endless water sports some of them being boat rentals and tours, paddle boards, water skiing, wake boarding, scuba certifications and snorkel rentals. There is also plenty to do on land if the water isn’t really your thing such as a Gros Piton hike, ATV rides, zip lining, cacao farm tours, and horseback riding. We did the Gros Piton hike and both of us are very active, it was hard, like really hard. The locals who guide the hike do it in flip flops and can do the whole thing in under an hour which is just absolutely insane. It is incredibly steep and I would definitely recommend you to be in good shape before embarking on this.

If you are more of a relaxed vacationer versus an adventurous one there is ample chill space. The communal pool is huge, you can order food and drinks poolside and beachside while gazing into the sparkling ocean. You can order room service straight to your villa as well if you want to truly feel like you’re the only ones there.

Saint Lucia is a gorgeous Caribbean island filled with endless activities, colorful towns and kind people. Everyone you encounter at the resorts speaks English and English technically is the official language of Saint Lucia but many people speak Saint Lucian French Creole, it’s always nice to know a word or two in the native language to show respect to the culture. Enjoy your Saint Lucian getaway and make sure you soak it all in.
