The Power of Packing Light: Tips to Avoid Overpacking

Packing is not something most of us want to spend time doing. It’s stressful trying to plan outfits, to bring just the right amount, not too much and not too little, and to choose the cutest pieces. Here are some simple tips and tricks that can make the process easier and keep you from being that person waiting for their three suitcases at baggage claim for a week long trip. In this blog post, we will discuss how you can pack more efficiently so your luggage doesn’t weigh as much as you and you don’t have to pay those overweight luggage fees or, in some cases, even check anything at all.

I used to suffer from the over packer mentality, I would make my boyfriend carry an extra bag just so I could bring everything I could possibly need. Turns out I didn’t use half of the things I brought, which tends to be the case. We really just over pack for the security of having those 20 bikinis because what if we decide we don’t like the first 15? I’ve since learned some helpful tactics that allows me to bring my large purse and a small roller bag that fits in the overhead compartment with everything I could need and I’m going to share that with you.

Truly take an inventory of what you will need

I know it’s hard trying to pack just the right amount and make sure everything you wear will be instagram worthy but really think before you just throw things into your bag. Have you worn this before? Do you think you will actually wear it? If you’re even a little bit unsure about something do NOT throw it in just for security sake, I promise you will not miss it. Jeans are NOT your friend. Bring one pair of full length jeans and one pair of jean shorts if your destination warrants it. I hardly ever bring jeans because they take up too much space and they’re uncomfortable, who actually likes jeans? Instead, depending on your destination opt for leggings, skirts, athleisure or dresses. These are all more comfortable options, they are easier to walk around in if you’re exploring a town and easier to get out of if you’re in a beach oasis. I love any kind of athleisure for traveling, it’s so easy to pack because of the material, plus it is adorable and functional.

Wear your heavier clothing to the airport

If you must pack jeans or a sweater/jacket or anything of that nature you should definitely wear it to the airport (maybe not jeans, that would be miserable). That goes for bulky sneakers and shoes as well. No one cares what you look like at the airport, I promise you, and if they do then rock that weird outfit you’ve got on, you’re going on vacation to have the time of your life, their opinion doesn’t matter. Nearly every plane I’ve been on has been frigid so no worries about overheating on the plane in your strange airport fit, I’ve actually found that a sweater is a must have on most flights.

You don’t need all of those shoes

You do not need more than 3 pairs of shoes, if that. Bring a pair of sneakers, wear them to the airport, a pair of sandals that can be dressed up or dressed down and a pair of heels if you feel it’s necessary. Remember that if you find yourself in dire need of something chances are you are going somewhere where you can purchase it and if you are going somewhere where you can’t purchase them then you probably don’t actually need them. I brought heels to the Maldives… why did I do that? It’s a fancy location, don’t I need heels? I didn’t need heels, I really ended up needing my one pair of sandals and aside from wearing those I was barefoot. Really take your destination into consideration when you pack. If you are going to a small town in Italy it might be nice to have heels but keep in mind that most streets are cobblestone. Heels + cobblestone streets is not usually a match made in heaven.

It takes a mix of careful consideration and not overthinking to pack properly. Most people are not born with the natural ability to take things into consideration and not overthink, it’s totally fine. Try out these helpful tips and try to remember that you are almost never going to wear all of the clothes that you want to bring. It takes too long to decide on an outfit, throw something on and enjoy your travel experience. If worst comes to worst buy your boyfriend a duffle bag and shove some stuff in there when he’s not looking. Happy travels!
